5 Best LapTimes BMW

The Nürburgring Nordschleife is arguably the most challenging racetrack in the world, and with BMW having a test facility at the circuit for product development, the five best lap times for production BMWs are very impressive.

It should come as a no surprise that variants of the M3 coupe feature strongly in the list of best Nürburgring times for BMW production cars. In fact, the first place entry, the 2010 M3 GTS, knocked the second place 2003 M3 CSL from the top of the list by shaving the already good lap time by two seconds for a blistering lap of 7:48.00, also putting it ahead of some exotic competition including the Lamborghini Murcielago.

The extra 90 horsepower of the 4.4 liter V8 engine in the GTS more than made up for the 158kg increase in weight over 2003’s CSL. The same can’t be said for the third entry in the list; the 2007 M3 E92, the first model with the new S65 V8 in 4.0 liter configuration. While the E92 didn’t break the 8 minute mark, clocking 8:05.00, with an average speed around the challenging circuit of just under 96mph, it certainly shows how competitive the M3 can be for a range of weights and designs.

Fourth in the list is the 2000 BMW Z8 roadster with a lap time of 8:07.00. Two seconds slower than the M3 E92, the Z8 matched exactly the time set by the Ferrari 550 Maranello in 1997, helped no doubt by the perfect 50/50 weight distribution accomplished by positioning the 4.9 liter S62 V8 behind the front axle. That the Z8 is still in the top 5 for BMW production Nürburgring lap times after 11 years is a testament to the excellence of its chassis dynamics.

In fifth place, the 2005 BMW M6 has a best lap time less than second slower than the Z8, just 0.76 seconds slower to be precise, the 507 bhp produced by the F1 derived S65 V10 propelling the big car around the circuit at an average speed of 95mph .

Incredibly, all five best BMW Nürburgring Nordschleife lap times were set by one man; Horst Von
Saurma, former racing driver and chief editor of Sport Auto magazine, making comparison of the
results more meaningful than with a different driver for each car.

Nürburgring lap times are often bettered by newer models, so while the 2010 M3 GTS will still
have the best Nürburgring lap time for a production BMW, look out for the new 2012 BMW M5
(F10) to soon knock the E92 M3 down from third to fourth position. With a recent unofficial best
lap time of 7:55.00, the 560 horsepower M5 will not only be the third fastest production BMW, but
also the fastest sedan in the world around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, raising the bar for other
manufacturers.

You can get some great BMWs and a great place to find a used bmw for sale is online such as the
great UK classified portal GumTree. You might not get the laptimes above but im sure that you can
get a great car for a great price.
